Android 11 is finally here, and Google has taken things one step further by introducing Android 11 on selected phones by third-party OEMs, alongside its own Pixel phones.
This Android 11 release is only meant for developers, so don't bother searching it out and installing it on your supported device; otherwise, you will wind up suffering endless frustration.
If you are excited to receive Android 11 on your phone soon, here is our lowdown on few of the coolest and most important new features that Android 11 is bringing to the table, and you would love to have on your phone.
The notification panel
Notifications are now broken up into five categories, some with big headers on top of each section. "Conversations," "Notifications," and "Silent" notifications get the big header labels in the notification panel, while ongoing notifications from things like Google Maps navigation don't get a label but are pinned to the top of the panel. The fifth type is for media notifications, which now live inside the Quick Settings panel. This is a wild change.
Bubble app heads
With Android 11, the bubbles feature will make its way to mass rollout. Google has informed developers to start using the bubbles API, so once Android 11 ships, apps should be making use of the tool.
One-time permission
In Google's quest to perfect Android security and privacy, the company will release a new option in the platform's permission system. In Android 10, you have the option to grant an app two different permissions for location access: "While Using The App" or "Deny". In Android 11, a new permission will appear: "Only This Time".
In other words, users will be able to grant an app permission to use location access once. There's no indication if this permission request will happen every time you open the app, or if it's a one-and-done option, which means you would have to re-install the app to give it location access.
No matter how the feature winds up, at least we know Google is working to improve the security and privacy of the platform.
Native Screen Recording
Finally, screen recording comes to Android natively. Users of phones by many OEMs such as OnePlus have already had screen recording baked into their phones using the custom interface. However, with native recording, you get default integration of the screen recorder into the system. This will allow users to record and live stream their mobile gameplay sessions, without needing to worry about the safety aspect of using third-party apps.
Better media controller
Android 11 offers a refined media controller and you can also toggle the audio output. For example, if you want to use the phone speaker to hear something despite having your Bluetooth earphones connected, you can do so by simply tapping on a dedicated button without having to disconnect the earphone and then reconnect it.
Device controls
In Android 11 and later, the Quick Access Device Controls feature allows the user to quickly view and control external devices such as lights, thermostats, and cameras from the Android power menu. Device aggregators (for example, Google Home) and third-party vendor apps can provide devices for display in this space. This guide shows you how to surface device controls in this space and link them to your control app.
Motion Sense gesture
This feature will only be on the Pixel line of devices, at least in the beginning. The feature allows you to pause/play with a Motion Sense gesture. So while listening to music, you could gesture with your device to pause or play the current tune. This will be handy if you constantly need to pause your music to converse with an actual human.Scheduled dark theme
Android 11 is reported to now have the ability to schedule when your device shifts to dark mode. You can either set a custom time or have an Android shift between dark and light mode based on sunrise/sunset times in your time zone.
